Oculus Headset Basics

Learn the fundamentals of using and taking care of your Oculus for Business headset.

Basic Operations

To maximise the life of your Oculus for Business headset's internal battery, we recommend that you fully power down the device when it's not in use. This is especially important if you'll be traveling with the Quest, or carrying it in a bag or a case for a period of time.

To power off your Oculus for Business headset and preserve the battery:

  1. Hold the power button for three seconds until a menu appears in your headset.

  2. Select Shut Down from the menu.

This will ensure that the device isn't accidentally turned back to full power mode by accidentally touching the power button, or from the device falsely detecting that it's been placed on someone's head for use.

We also recommend only charging your headset with the charger that was included in the box and avoiding charging your headset when it's in use.

If you run into problems with a headset, you can try a factory reset. Performing a factory reset will erase any information on the device and revert the headset to its default factory settings.

To perform a factory reset:

  1. Turn off your Oculus for Business headset.

  2. Hold the power and volume (-) button on your headset down simultaneously until the boot screen loads on your headset.

  3. Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Factory Reset and press the power button.

  4. Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Yes and press the power button.

  5. Pressing the power button will confirm the selection and factory reset the headset.

If you have trouble turning the headset back on after the reset, hold down the power button for 30 seconds.

If you're having trouble with your Oculus for Business headset, you can try restarting it to resolve the issue. To restart the device:

  1. Hold the power button to bring up the power down options.

  2. Select Restart with your controller to reboot the device.

The serial number for your Oculus headset can be found on the headset strap, the controllers and the original Oculus packaging.

To locate the serial number for your headset:

Gently pull the right-hand side strap arm back away from the lenses to expose the 14-character alphanumeric serial number.

If the headset straps are on a looser setting, the serial number may already be exposed without having to pull the strap.

To locate the serial number for the controllers :

  1. Remove the battery cover from the controller by sliding it level, but away from the controller.

  2. The serial number will be on the inside edge of the battery cover.

To locate the serial number for the Oculus for Business package: :

  1. Look for a small, white sticker marked with a barcode on the outside of the Oculus for Business box.

  2. Under the barcode, find "S/N" followed by the 14-character alphanumeric serial number.

Cleaning and Care

It's important to promote hygiene and safety best practices when using Oculus Quest across your workforce. Do not share headsets with persons with contagious conditions, infections or disease. Learn more about health and safety when using an Oculus device.

For advice relating to specific contagious conditions such as COVID-19, we suggest following the guidance from your local health authorities and the World Health Organization.

Bear in mind that cosmetic wear and tear and physical damages aren't covered under warranty.

Headset and Controllers

  • Wash your hands before using headsets and handling shared equipment. Use nitrile gloves while cleaning and dispose of gloves after each use. Between cleanings, either wash hands thoroughly or use hand sanitiser.

  • Clean devices between each use with non-abrasive anti-bacterial wipes. Suggested cleaning products include Wexford Cleancide or Lysol wipes. When using these products, wet the surface until it is visibly wet. The surface should remain wet for 10 minutes. Let the equipment air dry, then wipe off the remaining cleaning solution with a dry microfibre cloth.

  • For devices that do not have wipeable facial interfaces available, use barrier masks while following the same cleaning guidelines noted above between use. Replace and discard barriers after each use.

Headset Lenses

  • Use a dry optical lens microfibre cloth to clean your headset lenses. Don't use liquid, alcohol-based or chemical cleansers.

  • Starting from the centre of the lens, gently wipe the lens in a circular motion moving outwards.

Note: Alcohol wipes should not be used on lenses as they can damage them. Alcohol wipes should only be used on other headset components. Use with caution.

It's important to take care of your Oculus for Business headset and secure it in a safe place. Bear in mind that your limited warranty doesn't cover normal wear and tear or physical damages.

To keep your Oculus for Business headset safe, follow these tips:

  • To avoid damaging your lenses and display, keep your headset away from direct sunlight. Your headset can be permanently damaged from less than a minute of exposure to direct sunlight.

  • To avoid scratching your lenses, keep your headset away from sharp objects (e.g. cable tips, keys).

  • To avoid damaging your headset or straps, be gentle when adjusting your headset and tightening the straps.

  • Do not use or wear your headset while connected to the power adapter or charging.

  • To avoid general damage:

    • Don't leave your headset in extremely hot locations (e.g. inside a car).

    • Don't leave your headset near heat sources (e.g. furnace).

    • Don't leave your headset near pets or small children.

    • Don't eat, drink or smoke near your headset.

    • Secure your headset in a safe place when you're not using it.

Adjusting Fit and Feel

Wearing Your Headset

To put your headset on:

  1. Loosen the side straps and then the top strap.

  2. Starting from the back, put your headset on.

    • Make sure that you pull the back strap down until it cradles the base of your head.

    • If you're wearing glasses, put the headset on from the front first.

  3. Tighten the side tabs and then top strap.

    • Make sure that the straps aren't too tight. The headset should fit comfortably and shouldn't apply too much pressure on your face and head.

To adjust your view:

  • With your hands holding both sides of your headset, slowly move your headset up and down until the picture is clear and the headset feels comfortable.

  • If you wear glasses, learn more about prescription lenses for your Oculus for Business headset, or insert the glasses spacer into your headset prior to using it.

  • If the image in your headset isn't clear, you can use your left thumb to move the image slider on the left of the bottom of your headset to the left and right until the image is clear.

Before you wear your Oculus for Business headset with glasses, check to make sure that the width and height of your frames are the following sizes:

  • Width: 142 mm or less

  • Height: 50 mm or less

Once you've made sure that your glasses are the right size, insert the eyeglass spacer into your headset to provide a larger fit.

To insert the eyeglass spacer:

  1. Using your fingers, carefully remove the lens rings and put them to one side.

    • Place your headset face down on a flat, clean surface.

    • Hold the headset still with one hand, and pull upwards from the outer edge of the lens ring until it comes loose. Repeat this step for the other lens ring.

  2. Remove the facial interface foam.

  3. Insert the glasses spacer and gently press the spacer into place.

    • When the glasses spacer is correctly set, it should not move or fall out of the headset easily.

  4. Reinsert the facial interface foam.

  5. Using your fingers, carefully press the lens rings back in place until they click.

To put on your headset with glasses:

  1. Loosen the side and top straps on your headset.

  2. Starting from the front, put your headset on over the top of your glasses.

  3. With the headset on your head, tighten the side straps and then the top strap to secure the headset.

To take off your headset with glasses:

  1. Loosen the side and top straps.

  2. With both hands, pull the headset forwards, then take it off.

Two terms that are often used when talking about headset adjustments and clarity are "IPD" and "lens spacing".

  • IPD stands for inter-pupillary distance, or simply put, the distance between your pupils.

  • Lens spacing refers to the distance between the clearest spots on the two lenses inside your headset.

To achieve the best image clarity, lens spacing should line up with your IPD as much as possible. Quest headsets best accommodate IPDs of between 56 and 70 mm, or about 95% of adults.

Finding your IPD

If you aren't sure what your IPD is, the best way to ensure the most accurate measurement is to see your optometrist.

If seeing an optometrist isn't an option, many companies that sell prescription glasses have online or app-based resources to help you get an accurate IPD number at home.

Quest 2 IPD

To change the lens spacing on your Oculus Quest 2, gently adjust the lenses by shifting them together or apart. There are three lens spacing settings for Quest 2.

If you know your IPD, the table below shows which lens spacing setting we suggest.

IPD RangeLens Spacing Setting
61 mm or smaller 1 (narrowest, 58 mm)
61 mm to 66 mm2 (middle, 63 mm)
66 mm or larger 3 (widest, 68 mm)

Bear in mind that these are only suggestions, particularly if your IPD is on or near the edge of each lens spacing setting's suggested range. The best setting for you can depend on numerous factors, including things that can change with each use, such as where a piece of content has you directing your gaze or how the headset is positioned on your face when you put it on. Don't hesitate to try a different lens spacing setting to see if it improves image clarity for you.

Quest IPD

To change the IPD on your Oculus Quest, gently move the slider on the bottom left side of the headset. Slide left for more space, or slide right to bring the lenses closer together.

Oculus Touch Controllers

Oculus Touch controllers come pre-paired to the headset that they're delivered with. If you have controller pairing issues after the device has been provisioned, try restarting your headset. To do this:

  1. With your headset on, hold the power button on the top of your headset down until you're prompted with a shut-down screen.

  2. Select Restart to reboot your headset.

Once it has turned back on, press any button on the controllers. You should see a light above the A/B and X/Y buttons on each controller. If you don't, check the battery in each controller and make sure that they're properly seated.

You can also manually pair Touch controllers with your Oculus for Business headset. Pairing controllers is an admin action and will require an Admin PIN to complete.

To pair Touch controllers to your Oculus for Business headset:

  1. From the Universal menu, select See All.

  2. Enter your Admin PIN and select Go

  3. Select View All Settings.

  4. Under the Devices tab, select Controllers.

  5. Select Pair, then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the pairing setup.

Bear in mind that you can only have one set of Touch controllers paired to a headset at a time.

.

The included lanyards are used to secure the Oculus Touch controllers to your wrists during use.

To connect the lanyards to your Oculus Touch controllers:

  1. Pick up one of your controllers and remove the magnetic battery cover by lightly sliding your thumb down the battery door until it comes loose.

  2. On the inside edge of your controller, below the open battery compartment, you'll see a circular cut-out. Slide the plastic end of your lanyard into the small hole in the centre of the circular cut-out. When the lanyard is seated correctly, the plastic piece sits entirely inside the hole.

  3. Slide the string of your lanyard downwards so that it's sitting in the lanyard cut-out at the bottom of the controller. If it's seated correctly, it won't obstruct the battery door cover you removed in step one.

  4. Slide the magnetic battery door cover back into place until it clicks and sits flush against the controller.

  5. Before using, pull down on your lanyard to ensure that it's securely connected to the controller and doesn't unseat the battery cover.

Oculus Quest 2 and Accessories

Please notethat, due to its light colouring, some hair dyes may come off on and change the colour of your headstraps on your Quest 2. If this happens, you can wash your headstrap:

  1. Remove your headstrap from your Quest 2.

    1. Pull apart the velcro on the strap at the front of your headset.

    2. Gently remove one of the firm arms from the side of your headset.

    3. Slide the top strap off the detached firm arm.

  2. Use cold water and soap to clean your headset strap.

  3. Allow your headset strap to air dry, do not try to put it in a dryer.

  4. Reattach your headstrap to your Quest 2

    1. Slide the back loop of the headstrap over one of the detached firm arms.

    2. Move the headstrap back to it's original position so that its centred between the side straps.

    3. Slide the velcro part of the strap through the plastic loop at the top of the headset.

    4. Follow the fit steps listed above to adjust your headset until it's resting lightly on your face, and the picture is clear.

Oculus Quest 2 and the Elite strap with battery both utilise Optimised Battery Charging. Optimised Battery Charging takes multiple factors into account in order to provide the best overall charging and usage experience. This means that the battery may not charge to 100% at all times while in use.

If you want to extend the battery life of your Oculus Quest 2, you can purchase the Quest 2 Elite strap with battery. This accessory enhances the fit and comfort of your Quest 2 with rigid straps, a rear hammock for weight distribution and extends the playing time of Quest 2.

Battery level monitoring

When you use the Elite strap with battery on your Quest 2, the main battery status indicators such as the LED on the side of your headset, and the main battery level shown in your headset, will show the combined battery level of your Quest 2 and Elite strap with battery. If you select the headset power icon in VR, it will show you a more detailed view of the battery status with separate charge levels for the internal headset battery and Elite strap battery.

In addition to monitoring the colour of the LED on your Quest 2, you can also see battery levels in VR:

In your headset, on the universal toolbar, you'll see the combined level of your headset with your Elite Strap WIth Battery. You'll know that you're seeing the combined battery level when your headset icon is replaced by your headset with Elite strap with battery icon . You can also hover over the icon to see a breakdown of battery levels for your headset and Elite strap with battery.

No, you can't use your Elite strap with battery and your Oculus Link cable simultaneously. You can leave the strap attached to Quest 2, but to use your Link cable, you'll need to unplug the Elite Strap's USB-C cable from the headset and plug in the Link cable.

Yes. The examples below represent how the combined battery level of your headset and Elite strap with battery will behave in different situations.

  • If the internal battery for your Quest 2 is charged, but the Elite Strap battery is still charging, the status indicators will show that the devices are charging.

  • When the Elite Strap battery is plugged into your Quest 2, the LED on your headset will turn on for five seconds.

    • If both batteries are fully charged, the LED will turn green.

    • If the Elite Strap is providing a charge to the headset, the LED will turn orange.

After five seconds, the LED will shut off to preserve power unless the Elite Strap is plugged into the Quest 2 power adapter and is actively receiving current. In this case, the LED will stay lit.

  • Your Quest 2 will use up all of the charge in the Elite Strap With Battery before it starts to use up the internal battery.

  • If the combined battery level of your Quest 2 and Elite Strap battery drops below 10%, the LED on your Quest 2 will turn red to indicate the low battery levels. It will remain red until the combined battery level goes back above 10%, or the headset is turned off.

We strongly recommend that you only use the USB-C charging cable and power adapter that was included with your Quest 2 headset to charge the Elite strap with battery. Other chargers could damage the battery or headset.
